Backing up your XL provides assurance that your data won’t be lost if something catastrophic happens to your XL.
Download the XL Firmware Manager with a link provided by Technical Support, and then double-click to run it. This will start up an easy-to-use wizard that guides you through the upgrade process.
First, you’ll be asked to identify your XL device and log into it with the Administrator role:
- Enter your XL’s IP address or network name.
- Enter the Administrator Password for your XL.
- Click Log In.
If your login is successful, you’ll be taken to the next page. Otherwise, a message will appear on the screen letting you know what went wrong.
After successfully logging in, you’ll see the Management Menu. If your device is running an older version of the firmware, it will look like this, giving you the option to upgrade:
To begin creating a backup of your XL device, choose the Create a backup option.
To restore a previously-created backup, choose the Restore from backup option.
If you choose the Create a backup option, you’ll enter a page that lets you choose the folder where your backup will be saved:
- If you want to store your XL backup in a different folder, press Browse and choose the new folder.
- Press Create to start creating the backup.
The page will change to show a progress bar; when the backup is complete, it will change again:
Clicking on the filename link will open the folder where you saved your backup.
From here, you can choose to use your XL, continue performing management tasks on your XL, or manage a different XL.
If you choose the Restore from backup option, you’ll enter a page that lets you choose the backup file you want to restore:
- Press Browse and choose the backup file to restore to your XL.
- Press Next to continue.
Before beginning, it’s a good idea to create a binary snapshot of your XL device in case restoring from the backup does not have the desired effect. Skipping this step is possible, but is not recommended. To do so, select the Skip this step checkbox before pressing Next.
- If you want to store your XL binary snapshot in a different folder, press Browse and choose the new folder.
- Press Next to begin the restore process. This takes you to a progress page.
There’s nothing for you to do on the progress page. It keeps you notified about what’s going on with the restore process. The current step is marked with a blue arrow, and completed steps are marked with green check marks.
When the restore process is complete, the progress page will change to let you know that you’re done. From here, you can choose to use your XL, continue performing management tasks on your XL, or manage a different XL.
